Using Wii Remotes With Flash

January 10th, 2010

Connecting a Wii remote to my PC for use in flash is something that I’ve been meaning to do for  a while – however, when I built my PC the one thing I forgot was bluetooth. Over the holidays, I remedied this situation by picking up this USB bluetooth dongle, and was happy to find that setting up WiiFlash Server couldn’t be easier. The dongle I linked to comes with BlueSoleil bluetooth software, which does just fine for connecting to a controller.

I found this handy guide linked to on the WiiFlash homepage and was up and running in no time. I had one problem in that the way that I connected to the remote was different to the one documented at the link, so I just wanted to go over the slight differences here, in case anyone else is having trouble.

I followed the linked tutorial fine up until the ‘Pairing the WiiMote’ section. At this point, rather than finding ‘Bluetooth places’,  had to boot up the BlueSoleil software which came with my dongle. I was greeted by this screen:

BlueSoleil start screen

At this point, you want to turn on your remote so it can be discovered. Do so by pressing the 1 + 2 buttons simultaneously. All four lights on the controller should start to flash. During this time, the Wii remote is discoverable via bluetooth. In the BlueSoleil software, clicking on the orange blob in the center should start your computer scanning for bluetooth devices.

After a short while, the Wii remote should appear, along with any other bluetooth devices nearby.

Double clicking on the controller will establish contact. If at any point your Wii remote turns off, simply press the 1 +2 buttons again and resume where you left off.

Once you’re connected, youll need to register the controller as an interface device. Do so by clicking on the highlighted mouse icon.

Congratulations, you’re connected! At this point, the remote should stay on and connected until you start up WiiFlash server. When you do so, it should be able to connect and the controller will vibrate. From here, you can run the example flash files that come with the software (you may have  to re-compile them to get them going), and then start programming for your Wii remote.
